The fostering process

To ensure fostering is the right fit for you, you’ll need to undertake assessments and checks designed to safeguard everyone involved.

Although the process may seem lengthy and involve some personal questions, it provides an invaluable opportunity to talk to professionals and other carers, as well as to friends and family. These conversations can help you reflect and decide whether fostering is the right path for you.

The fostering process with us typically takes around 20 weeks. There’s no commitment at any stage during the enquiry and application process.

Step 1 - initial enquiry

To make an enquiry, you can either complete our enquiry form or call us on 01202 123 345.

Our initial enquiries are directed to the Fostering South West team, who are on hand to provide support and guidance.

The friendly team will get in touch with you for an initial conversation in which they can answer any of your questions and cover the basic criteria surrounding eligibility.

Step 2 - home visit

If you meet the basic criteria and wish to move forward, we’ll arrange an initial home visit. During this visit, we’ll discuss what fostering involves and how it could fit into your current lifestyle.

Step 3 - assessment

If the home visit is successful the assessment process will begin.

To support you throughout your journey, you’ll be assigned a friendly and supportive social worker who will guide you each step of the way.

The assessment, which includes DBS and medical checks, is carried out with comprehensive training. We’ll cover what makes fostering so rewarding, as well as some of the challenges that can come with it. You’ll also pick up useful parenting tips and learn how to support children who’ve been through trauma, abuse or neglect.

During the assessment process you’ll also get the chance to meet with experienced foster carers.

Step 4 - panel

Finally, your assessment will be presented to the fostering panel who will let you know whether your application has been successful.

Once accepted by the fostering panel, you won’t be thrown in at the deep end but allowed to find your feet and steadily build your confidence.
