Who can foster?

There are many misconceptions about who can foster but great foster carers come from all walks of life.

It doesn’t matter your age, gender, ethnic background, what sort of house you live in or how much you earn. It doesn’t matter whether you are married, single or in a same sex relationship. All that matters is that you can provide a safe and loving home for a child in need.

Your life experiences can help you relate to and support a child or young person who’s going through a difficult time.

Our basic requirements to foster:
  • a safe and welcoming home - for most types of fostering, that includes having a spare bedroom
  • time and flexibility - you’ll need to have the time and availability to support the needs of the child or young person
  • to be over 21 years old - there’s no upper age limit to fostering and many older carers bring a wealth of experience and stability
